X-07, X-08, X-09, X-10 Mounted Electromechanical Combination Locks

Four locks manufactured by the Mas-Hamilton Group, now known as Kaba-Mas, have been approved under Federal Specification FF-L-2740B, Locks, Combination, Electromechanical, or previous versions of the FF-L-2740 specification.  The model X-07 lock was approved in November 1991.  It was the only lock approved under FF-L-2740 until the model X-08 lock was approved in March 1999.  Kaba Mas discontinued production of the X-07 and began production of the X-08 in October 1999.  The X-09 lock, manufactured by Kaba Mas, was approved on June 12, 2002.  All three locks are still approved for protection of classified material, but the X-07, X-08, and X-09 are no longer available.  Parts are no longer available for X-09 locks (and CDX-09 door devices).  All X-07 and X-08 locks (and CDX-07 and CDX-08 locks) have reached the end of their expected service life.  The DoD Lock Program recommends that activities still using these locks consider replacing them, which is cheaper than experiencing a lockout.  The X-10 lock, also manufactured by Kaba Mas, was approved by the General Services Administration under the requirements of Federal Specification FF-L-2740B on April 9, 2013.

The X-10 lock is available from DLA Land and Maritime and GSA Global Supply.  Click on the Ordering Information tab for NSNs and information on how to procure this lock.

X-10 Electromechanical Combination Lock

The X-10 lock was approved by the General Services Administration under the requirements of Federal Specification FF-L-2740B.  The X-10 can be light gray or black in color, and same in size and shape as the X-09.  Looking at the dial ring, one distinction visually from the X-10 is that the manufacturer date stamp is at the 8 o'clock position on the dial ring and begins with "XA", "XI", or "XK".  The X-09 date begins with "A" and is located at the 9 o'clock position (See pictures below).  Another distinction is the X-10 has a backlit display, eliminating the need for external light sources when locks are installed in poorly lit areas.  The lock case, mounted inside the container, has four mounting holes for mounting the lock case without having to take the lock case apart as you do with the X-09 lock.  Operation of the X-10 is much like the operation of the X-09. The dialing sequence is left-right-left-right and the lock can be powered-up in either direction.

Disposal of X-10 Locks

X-09 Electromechanical Combination Lock

The X-09 lock was approved by the General Services Administration under the requirements of Federal Specification FF-L-2740A.  It is light gray in color, similar in size and shape to the X-08.  Construction of the X-09 is similar to the X-08; the generator is in the dial ring cover, and there is a cover lock pin to deter tampering with the lock.

The X-09 lock is no longer manufactured but is still approved for use in protecting classified material.  Parts are no longer available for X-09 locks (and CDX-09 door devices).  If this lock fails, or requires replacement, it must be replaced with a lock meeting FF-L-2740B

Operation of the X-09 is much like the operation of the X-07.  The dialing sequence is left-right-left-right, the lock can be powered-up in either direction, and there is no "SA" error condition.  The liquid crystal display (LCD) has been redesigned to restrict viewing of the numbers to a narrow area directly over the LCD and there is a clutch in the dial to prevent over-torque of the dial.

Disposal of X-09 Locks

When disposing of Kaba Mas X-09 (and CDX-09 locks), they can be sent to the DoD Lock Program, see our Combination Lock Support page for disposal instructions.

X-08 Electromechanical Combination Lock

The X-08 combination lock does not appear on the qualified products list for FF-L-2740 because it is not currently available -- it is not presently being manufactured.  The X-08 is still approved for securing classified material.  All X-08 (and CDX-08) locks have reached the end of their expected service life.  The DoD Lock Program recommends that activities still using these locks consider replacing them with a lock meeting FF-L-2740B, which is cheaper than experiencing a lockout.  We also do not recommend saving parts from these locks as they should not be repaired.

SPECIAL NOTICE

Attention X-08 Users

Important information for people who have Kaba Mas (previously Mas-Hamilton) X-08 combination locks on their security containers or vault doors.  You may have a problem getting an X-08 combination lock to "power-up" if the lock hasn't been operated for an extended period.

Power generated when the dial is turned to the left, is stored in two supercapacitors.  The charge in the supercapacitors gradually dissipates if the lock isn't used for an extended period of time (more than a week).  When this happens it will need to be fully charged before it will operate.  To charge the capacitor, dial left approximately 40 turns.  A lock that receives regular usage (minimum of once a week) will require only a few left rotations to power.

Attention:  Technical Support Personnel

A problem was encountered while attempting to change the combination of an X-08.  After selecting the mode of operation, the lock prompted the user to "dL" (dial left).  This was done, with several vigorous turns of the dial counterclockwise, and the new combination was entered.  But instead of flashing the new combination twice, the lock displayed a lightning bolt.  A call to Kaba Mas technical support, yielding the following suggestion: When responding to the "dL" display, turn the dial left three times at moderate speed, and then enter the new combination.  This procedure was followed, and the lock then flashed the new combination.  Keep this in mind when troubleshooting the X-08.

Disposal of X-08 Locks

Kaba Mas X-08 (and CDX-08) locks do not have to be demilitarized or sent anywhere special.  They may be sent to a DLA Disposition Service location, or may be simply thrown away, depending on local requirements or procedures.
