Overview

Remediation technologies are available to treat a range of contaminants. These technologies rely upon biological, physical/chemical, thermal, and/or other treatment mechanisms. The technologies can be applied within the subsurface (in situ) or via excavation and treatment (ex situ). Helpful resources on key technologies can be found on this page.

Process

Remediation technologies are available to treat a range of contaminants. These technologies rely upon biological, physical/chemical, thermal, and/or other treatment mechanisms. The Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable (FRTR) provides a user-friendly tool for screening potentially applicable technologies for a remediation project. The updated matrix covers 49 in situ and ex situ technologies for soil or groundwater remediation. Variables used in screening include contaminants, development status, overall cost, and cleanup time. In-depth information on each technology is available, including direct links to additional resources.

For environmental restoration technologies, view the FRTR's Technology Screening Matrix.

For munitions response (MR) related technologies, see Chapters 4 to 6 in the Munitions Response Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) Guidance document.

In-Situ Remediation

Electrokinetic-Enhanced In Situ Remediation Fact Sheet (September 2023)
Electrokinetic (EK)-enhanced in situ remediation offers a promising approach to treating source zones at complex sites such as those with low-permeability. This fact sheet discusses how delivery methods work and explores two case studies where EK-enhanced in situ remediation was applied. Lessons learned and considerations for applying and implementing EK technologies are also summarized.

Optimizing
Remediation Technology

Optimizing Remediation Technologies User Guide (October 2022)
This document provides a description, an example performance plot and a summary of common operational problems with corresponding optimization recommendations for 15 selected remedial technologies.

Technology Screening

FRTR Technology Screening Matrix
A user-friendly tool for screening potentially applicable technologies for a remediation project. Covers in situ and ex situ technologies for soil and groundwater remediation. Variables used in screening table include contaminants, development status, overall cost, and cleanup time.
